At Smiline Family Dentistry, we believe your smile is our responsibility! A bright smile makes you feel more confident about yourself and makes everyone else’s day. We know broken teeth can be a massive cause of concern, and we’re here to relieve your stress.
Staining is entirely reversible with our quick, simple, and effective teeth whitening procedure performed at the clinic.
What Causes are Teeth Staining?
Tea, coffee, soda, and wine contain tannins that stain the enamel of teeth over time, making them appear yellow or brown. Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco can cause teeth to develop brown spots as well. Most importantly, poor dental hygiene results in teeth losing their shine. However, teeth naturally darken as you age due to enamel wearing down and professional teeth whitening can help restore your pearly whites.
How To Prepare For The Procedure?
Whitening is a simple in-clinic procedure that requires no prior preparation. You may book an appointment, have whitening performed, and leave within an hour. On your first visit, the dentist will make an impression of your teeth and gums to design your custom-made mouthguard for the procedure.
What Happens During Teeth Whitening?
The dentist will initially perform a checkup to examine your teeth, gums, and oral cavity thoroughly. A protective mouthguard is then put into place to safeguard your lips and buccal cavity from injury. Another barrier is created to protect the gums by applying a gingival protection agent that hardens into a protective layer. These barriers ensure that sensitive areas are not exposed to any chemicals during the treatment.
Then, the dentist places a specially designed tray into the mouth and proceeds to apply the teeth whitening paste on to the teeth carefully. This paste contains either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, which work by releasing oxygen into the enamel of the teeth to break down the staining molecules. The whole procedure will take around an hour after which your teeth will be noticeably lighter.
Once the treatment has begun, you will need to continue it at home. A whitening paste provided by the dentist has to be applied regularly for 30 to 60 minutes for two to four weeks for long-lasting results.
The effect lasts for approximately three years, and it is recommended that you visit the clinic regularly for checkups in between.
