What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure designed to remove infected or damaged tissue from the inside of a tooth. This tissue, known as the pulp, contains nerves and blood vessels that can become infected due to decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental procedures. Without treatment, this infection can spread to the surrounding teeth and gums, causing pain, swelling, and even tooth loss.

During root canal treatment, our dental team will remove the infected or damaged pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and fill it with a biocompatible material to help strengthen and protect the tooth. In most cases, a dental crown will be placed over the treated tooth to restore its shape, function, and appearance.

The Root Canal Treatment Process

The process begins with a consultation with Dr. Asra Ahmed at Smiline Family Dentistry in Milton, Ontario. During this consultation, Dr. Ahmed will examine your teeth and determine if a root canal is necessary.

If a root canal is recommended, Dr. Ahmed will begin by numbing the affected tooth and the surrounding area with a local anesthetic. Once the tooth is numb, Dr. Ahmed will make a small hole in the top of the tooth and use special instruments to remove the damaged or infected pulp from inside the tooth.

Once the pulp has been removed, Dr. Ahmed will clean and shape the inside of the tooth and fill it with a special material. In some cases, a temporary filling may be placed on top of the tooth to protect it until the final restoration is complete.

After the root canal treatment is complete, it is important to take care of your tooth to ensure its long-term success. Dr. Ahmed may recommend a crown or other restoration to protect and strengthen the tooth. It is also important to maintain good oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing regularly and visiting Smiline Family Dentistry for regular check-ups and cleanings.
